Advent 2008: The Twelve Days of Christmas

When I was a wee bairn, one of my favorite record albums was Christmas with the Chipmunks Vol. 2, a collection of Christmas tunes performed by, you guessed it, Alvin and the Chipmunks. One of the reasons I liked it so much was that it featured an absolutely hysterical version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas." Although I wouldn't have been able to define it as such at the time, it was perhaps the earliest example of metatextual humor I'd ever encountered, or at least the earliest such example I recognized and understood. I still think it's awfully funny.

Incidentally, this whole Twelve Days of Christmas thing is kind of confusing. As best I can figure, the days of Christmas are measured from sundown on Christmas Day. That's why Twelfth Night is observed on January 5 but Twelfth Day, a.k.a. the Feast of the Epiphany, on January 6. So depending on when you're reading this, it's either ninth day or tenth night of Christmas. Wacky!
