Ten random things: Ricardo Montelbán memorial edition (January 14 )

Ten Ricardo Montelbán quotes from "Space Seed" and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan:

  1. "Let them eat static."
  2. "Ah, Kirk, my old friend, do you know the Klingon proverb that tells us revenge is a dish that is best served cold? It is very cold in space!"
  3. "To the last, I will grapple with thee... from Hell's heart, I stab at thee! For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee!"
  4. "Surely, I have made my meaning plain. I mean to avenge myself upon you, Admiral. I deprived your ship of power, and when I swing around, I mean to deprive you of your life."
  5. "I've done far worse than kill you, Admiral. I've hurt you. And I wish to go on hurting you. I shall leave you as you left me, as you left her; marooned for all eternity in the center of a dead planet... buried alive! Buried alive..."
  6. "You are in a position to demand nothing. I, on the other hand, am in a position to grant nothing."
  7. "It has been said that social occasions are only warfare concealed. Some would prefer it to be more honest, more... open."
  8. "He tasks me. He tasks me and I shall have him! I'll chase him 'round the moons of Nibia and 'round the Antares Maelstrom and 'round Perdition's flames before I give him up!"
  9. "There she is! Ah... not so wounded as we were led to believe. So much the better!"
  10. "You are an excellent tactician, Captain. You let your second in command attack, while you sit and watch for weakness."

I was just thinking the other day that I should do a Star Trek II-themed list, and look, here it is! Unfortunately, the reason I'm posting it today is that Ricardo Montalbán died today at the age of 88. I've been a Ricardo Montelbán fan for most of my life -- I loved Fantasy Island, especially the episodes that guest-starred Roddy McDowell as the Devil -- but I don't think I ever liked him more than when he played Khan. Or should I say, KHAAAAAAAAAAAAN! Either way, he'll be missed.
