Art on Sunday: Cod. 14

Unknown 10th century German illuminator
Cod. 14 (Initial Q. Quoniam quidem. Opening of Gospel of Luke.), 10th century
Ink on vellum
Cod. 14
Erzbischöfliche Diözesan- und Dombibliothek, Köln

This is not the work of art I had planned to post today, but circumstances beyond my control prevented me from doing so. Damn you, circumstances! Anyway, I was inspired to post this one after listening to an interview with the executive director of the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. It's well worth listening to, so what are you waiting for?

(And by the way, quoniam means, "since." It's the first word of the Gospel of Luke, but you knew that already, having already read the second line of this post.)
