Ten random things: February 9

Ten hymns from the Unitarian Universalist hymnal Singing the Living Tradition:

  1. You That Have Spent the Silent Night (Words: George Gascoigne/Music: Nikolaus Herman)
  2. This Land of Bursting Sunrise (John Haynes Holmes/David Hurd)
  3. Spirit of Life (Carolyn McDade)
  4. The Peace Not Past Our Understanding (John Holmes/Alfred Morton Smith)
  5. Amazing Grace (John Newton/Virginia Harmony)
  6. O Little Town of Bethlehem (Phillips Brooks/Lewis Redner)
  7. Faith of the Larger Liberty (Vincent B. Silliman/Bohemian Brethren’s Kirchengesänge)
  8. I Sought the Wood in Summer (Willa Cather/Hal Hopson)
  9. This is the Truth That Passes Understanding (Robert Terry Weston/Genevan Psalter)
  10. Surprised by Joy (Erik Routley/English folk melody)

I had a rare Sunday off yesterday, so I visited a new church: Unitarian Universalists of Sterling. I was surprised to learn the other day how close this was to my house; it took me less than ten minutes to walk there. And it was a gorgeous day for a walk; I had my coat fully unzipped by the time I reached the end of my street, and I didn't wear it at all on the way home. The service was very nice, as were the people I talked to after the church. Also, the UU theology is much more to my taste than that of the Southern Baptist church I visited in November, and the service was an hour shorter, which in my book counts for a lot. I have next Sunday off too, and I think I'll give them another try.
