The Sun Never Says
Even after all this time
The sun never says to the earth,
"You owe Me."
Look what happens with
A love like that,
It lights the Whole Sky.
Daniel Ladinsky (born 1948)
Edited April 18, 2013: This poem was originally attributed to Khwāja Šamsu d-Dīn Muḥammad Hāfez-e Šīrāzī (1315 – 1390), with Ladinsky named as translator. Since that time, it's been determined that Ladinsky wrote it himself, though he says that he heard Hafez recite it to him in a dream.
