Painted metal on vinyl and wood
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington
When I was a kid, I was fascinated by license plates. Still am, a little bit; it's always kind of exciting to see a plate I've never seen before. I'm also very interested in politics and American history, so it should come as no surprise that this one of my most favorite works of art: 51 real license plates, one from each state and the District of Columbia, spelling out the Preamble to the Constitution. What could possibly be better? Maybe a portrait of James K. Polk holding an armadillo.
