A to Z movies

I love movies, so this A to Z movies meme is right up my alley.

  • Animal House: The parade scene is without a question one of the funniest scenes ever committed to film. And I love the "Where Are They Now" updates.

  • The Blues Brothers: If only every movie based on an SNL skit was this good. Heck, if ANY SNL film was as good as this.

  • Casablanca: My favorite movie, bar none.

  • Dave: An admittedly slight romantic comedy, but Kevin Kline is great as the kind-hearted Presidential doppelgänger.

  • Election: Reese Witherspoon is my movie girlfriend.

  • Fargo: Marge Gunderson is one of the all-time great female characters

  • Ghostbusters: It deserves to be on this list just for introducing the phrase "it's more of a guideline than a rule" into my vocabulary.

  • Hoop Dreams: A moving documentary about two talent high school basketball players from the south side of Chicago, both of whom dream of NBA glory.

  • The Independent: I saw this mock documentary starring Jerry Stiller as a schlock movie producer (think Roger Corman) approaching the end of his career at the Boston Science Fiction Film Festival last year, and it brought the house down.

  • Jaws: I think this may be Steven Spielberg's best film.

  • The Killing Fields: I am all about the Sam Waterston love.

  • The Little Mermaid: One of my favorite animated films.

  • The Manchurian Candidate: It just blew my mind the first time I saw it, and it still manages to impress me every time I see it.

  • No Way Out: Yes, the Metro stop at Georgetown Park Mall is one of the biggest Washington DC-related geographical blunders in film history, but the movie is so tightly-paced and exciting I'm willing to overlook it.

  • O Brother, Where Art Thou?: For the soundtrack if for nothing else.

  • The Producers: Mel Brooks's funniest movie, and that's saying a lot.

  • The Quiet Man: One of John Wayne's finest performances.

  • Raiders of the Lost Ark: Possibly the best action film of my lifetime.

  • Singin' In the Rain: Absolutely the best movie musical ever made. I will accept no argument on this point.

  • The Truman Show: I bought a DVD player so I could own this film on DVD.

  • Unforgiven: Clint Eastwood's best film, as a director and as an actor.

  • Victory Through Air Power: One of the most influential propaganda films ever, not to mention one of the funniest.

  • Witness: Second only to Casablanca on my list of favorite films.

  • X-men: I've seen a lot of movies based on comic books, and this one may be the best of them. Ironic, since I never liked the comics all that much.

  • Young Frankenstein: "it's FRON-KEN-STEEN!" A hilarious satire of old horror movies that works even if you've never seen the films being parodied.

  • Zelig: A technical masterpiece; Woody Allen inserts himself into archival footage seamlessly, without resorting to the digital trickery that won Forrest Gump an Oscar for visual effects.
