William Willett Memorial Sundial, 1927
Granite
Willett Memorial Wood, Petts Wood, Kent, England
A lot of people give Benjamin Franklin credit for inventing Daylight Saving Time, but in fact it was invented by William Willett. This simple but elegantly designed sundial -- which is set permanently to Daylight Saving Time -- was erected in his honor in Petts Wood, where the idea for Daylight Saving Time first occurred to him. The inscription reads, "HORAS NON NUMERO NISI ÆSTIVAS," which translates as, "I will only tell the summer hours."
