I like to listen to audio books on my way to and from work. Not long ago, I heard about the site, a community of volunteers who record books in the public domain and make them freely available. The first LibriVox recording I listened to was the first one on this list, and I was impressed enough to try a second, which appears last. I was not as impressed. There is, it turns out, a small group of volunteers who devote themselves to reading entire books on their own; it was one of those who recorded The Swiss Family Robinson. Many, perhaps most, of the available works are group projects; The Return of the Native was one such project, and while many of the chapters were quite well done, several were just terrible. The woman who read the first and last chapters was particularly bad; she pronounced "Egdon" two different ways in a single chapter, and she consistently pronounced Clym Yeobright's last name as "Yee-o-bright." Oy. Anyway, I've decided to continue sampling their wares, though I'm making a point to avoid anything that one reader has worked on. Next up: Sense and Sensibility, read by the same gentleman who did The Swiss Family Robinson.
