Ten random things: June 4

Ten large companies that are both unionized and profitable:

  1. The Walt Disney Co.
  2. UPS
  3. AT&T
  4. Southwest Airlines
  5. General Mills
  6. General Dynamics
  7. Exxon
  8. US Steel
  9. Costco
  10. Safeway

New York Times business reporter Andrew Ross Sorkin yesterday made the thoroughly boneheaded claim that it was nearly impossible to name a company that was both successful and unionized. It's boneheaded not only because it is, in fact, absurdly easy to think of many such companies, but also because Sorkin made the comment on MSNBC, which is owned by General Electric, which is, say it with me, both unionized and successful. Sorkin sort of walked it back a little bit later in the day, saying he didn't mean it literally and that he was speaking in his role as a columnist rather than as a reporter and that therefore he wasn't obligated to say things that were true and/or accurate. Well, he didn't exactly say that last part, but I think it's a fair interpretation.
