Advent 2009: The Gate of the Year

Happy New Year's Eve! As I write this on the evening of Dec. 30, I don't know what I'll be doing tomorrow evening. My traditional New Year's Eve activity is to see a movie that starts late enough and lasts long enough so that I'm still in the theater watching the movie when New Year's Day rolls around. But with the winter weather that's forecast for tomorrow, I may be called out on a job. Time will tell.

The Gate of the Year

And I said the the man who stood at the gate of the year:
'Give me a light, that I may tread safely into the unknown!'
And he replied:
'Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known

So, I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly
   into the night.
And He led me toward the hills and the breaking of day in the
   lone East.
