Ten random things: January 27

Ten artists and songs that gave birth to the modern rock format:

  1. U2 - I Will Follow
  2. INXS - Good Times
  3. Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead
  4. Minor Threat - Straight Edge
  5. Blondie - Call Me
  6. New Order - True Faith
  7. Joe Jackson - Breaking Us In Two
  8. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Suck My Kiss
  9. Madness - One Step Beyond
  10. Berlin - Sex (I'm a...)

One of the all-music channels offered by Comcast is called Classic Alternative; it professes to feature, as it says up there in the list title, "artists and songs that gave birth to the modern rock format as well as those that carried its torch," a combination that allows them to play pretty much any song they want. I mean, Breaking Us In Two? I guess you can justify it by saying that Joe Jackson was a influence on Ben Folds, but it still not a song that springs to mind when I think of songs that paved the way for what we now call modern rock.
